About the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands

The Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands is located in the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and Philippines. It consists of fifteen islands, out of which ten islands are uninhabited.
A majority of the population lives on the following islands:
Saipan
Tinian
Rota
The Commonwealth is affiliated with the United States.

The total population of the islands is less than 100,000. Saipan is the capital and major city. The islands have a marine tropical climate, with not much variation in the weather throughout the year, due to the proximity to the sea. The United States dollar is the official currency

The major industry is the Garment industry, which employs a large number of female workers. As a result of this, The Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands has a larger number of working women as a percentage of the population compared to other countries. Till recently the hourly wages that were paid were less than 4 dollars, as result of which, the garments manufactured could be priced very competitively. These garments also did not face any import restrictions as they carried the "made in USA" tag. However, in the last few years, there has been an increase in the hourly wages to be paid due to government regulation.

The Northern Mariana Islands have a presidential representative democratic system, in which the governor is head of government for the region, with a multi-party system. Like many other Asian countries, competence is not a major factor in the election. Family background and influence are often more important.
